June 2009 Kendo Beginners Course

The next kendo beginners' course commences with an introductory evening on Monday 1st June 2009.

The class is a three month module, training twice a week on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at the Bryanston Primary School (10 Mount Rd. Bryanston) and you can also practice on Saturday morning from 10.00 to 11.00am at the Japanese School, Caledon Road, Emmarentia, or from 9.00 to 10.00am at the SanKawa dojo, Scout Hall, Bolton Road, Rosebank - however there is no formal beginners' class on Saturday.

The training dates are as follows:

Introductory Evening: Monday, 1st June (see below for details)

Beginners' Course:

June 1, 4, 8, 11, 15, 18, 22, 25, 29
July 2, 6, 9, 13, 16, 20, 2,3 27, 30
August 3, 6, 10, 13, 17, 20,

Grading Examination on Saturday  22nd August

Beginners must commit to the three month program as an integrated package. The cost is R950 to be paid in advance, which includes the following:
 
* Annual South African Kendo Federation Fees
* Three months dojo fees
* Technical Manual & Syllabus
* Training T-Shirt
* Personal Instruction
* Grading Fees
* Grade examination at the end of the three month module

The only other cost will be the purchase of a shinai (bamboo sword) - price varies from R300 to R600 depending on quality and the optional annual seminar fee. Practice clothing for the 3 month module is the training T-shirt and track suit bottom.
 
At the completion of the 3 month module, the student will have a clear vision of whether they wish to continue with kendo practice. If so, they will then join the normal class practice at the dojo of their choice. Dojo fees after the beginners' module are around  R240 per month (dojo dependant)  and, from the following year, there is an annual registration fee to the South African Kendo Federation of R140 (this fee is subject to review and will be levied by your dojo at the beginning of the year).
 
You will not require any further equipment for a further 2 to 3 months. At that time we will advise you and assist with the purchase of the clothing and armour.
